MONITORING
The central station utilized by Caribbean Security Limited is located off island. This ensures that your confidential information cannot be compromised. It is listed by Underwriter Laboratories and certified by Factory Mutual. Presently, the central station is one of less than two dozen Central Stations approved to monitor fire alarms in New York City. These requirements are among the most stringent in the United States. In addition to fire alarms, the central station also monitors burglary, supervisory and medical signals. The central station also performs monitoring of military, commercial, and residential accounts and also provides answering service capability on a national level. Video, voice and data are processed by highly trained personnel to ensure error free handling of signals.
UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, an independent testing organization that sets quality standards for all electronic and consumer products. UL Listed security alarm monitoring centers must comply with strict guidelines and undergo rigorous annual inspections. What does a UL 'Listed Central Station' mean to you? Essentially, it means your alarm monitoring center has credibility. Underwriter's Laboratory defines a UP 'Listed central station' as a common way to refer to an alarm monitoring facility that has demonstrated the ability to provide Standards complying service. In the case of monitoring stations, UL requirements cover:
- • 1. Building structure:
- • a. the central station building must meet rigid fire Standards as to building material
- and emergency features;
- • b. The building must be secure against intrusion, and include UL rated doors, locks,
- building materials and security systems).
- • 2. Central Station Facility Operations:
- • a. Personnel must be on-site 24 hours a day, every day.
- • b. Records for equipment maintenance and staffing must be kept.
- • c. Back-up communication methods must be in place.
- • d. UL mandates the number of operators on duty per shift. Non-UL stations have no
- requirements. Most have only one operator, especially in the late evening/early
- morning.
- • 3. Central Station Equipment Standards:
- • a. Alarm receiving equipment must have a redundancy (back-up) in case of equipment
- failure with 30-second switch over to insure no "down time".
- • b. A generator must be in place that automatically takes over powering of all central
- station equipment in case of AC power failure.
- • c. The central station must have Uninterruptible Power Source that insures constant
- filtered power to equipment and in effect is a fail safe of at least 4 hours back up to
- generator.
In order to be able to provide Standards complying service, the building equipment and staffing requirements have to be met at all times (Source: Underwriters Laboratory: www.ul.com/alarmsystems). Earning and maintaining UL certification is not an easy or inexpensive undertaking for a company.
